Surya Uday Charitable Trust was founded in 2016 when two people saw 4,000 children being left behind — and decided that was unacceptable.
In 2016, Mrs. Anuradha Sharma Chhetri and Mr. Sachin Sharma partnered with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to survey Kangra district. The findings were stark: nearly 4,000 children with special needs were out of school — not for lack of capability, but for lack of access, infrastructure, and someone willing to show up for them.
Driven by what they found, they established Surya Uday Charitable Trust with a single school in Yol Cantt, Dharamshala. With 9 students, 7 staff, and limited resources — but boundless conviction — the work began. Today, the Trust serves 57 enrolled students, runs an official Special Olympics Kangra Sports Centre with 110 athletes, and has positively impacted over 5,000 people across the district.
The school runs Monday to Friday from a fully equipped campus: classrooms, therapy rooms, kitchen and dining areas, recreational zones, and washrooms designed for children with varying physical needs.
To improve the lives of children with special needs by giving them the opportunity to learn and function independently within their communities. We provide world-class facilities, train students in vocational and life skills, and work toward establishing a government-approved hostel for special needs persons as per RCI and NIMH guidelines.
A Himachal Pradesh where every child with special needs has access to quality education, meaningful employment, and the respect they deserve. We envision a society that recognises disability not as limitation but as a different kind of strength — and builds systems to match.
"The amount of work invested in keeping our school afloat is truly immeasurable. It is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our faculty, our community, and our donors. Together we have overcome countless challenges, achieving remarkable milestones and providing a nurturing environment for our students to thrive. It is a privilege to make a positive impact on these incredible children."
"I am thrilled to report that our school continues to grow and thrive thanks to unwavering community support. Our recent initiatives — enhanced educational programs and expanded support services — are making a significant impact. Thank you for your continued belief in our mission."
