What We Do

Programs built to unlock potential

Four pillars of work — education, sports, vocational training, and life skills — each designed to give children with special needs the tools to live independently and with dignity.

Special Education

Learning tailored to every child

Our school in Yol Cantt, Dharamshala, runs Monday through Friday with academic programs designed specifically for children with intellectual and physical disabilities. Every child has an individual learning plan developed by trained staff.

The campus is fully equipped — classrooms, therapy rooms, kitchen and dining areas, washrooms suited to children with physical needs, and recreational zones. We currently serve 57 enrolled students, with 233 more on the waiting list.

Special Olympics

From Dharamshala to the world stage

As the official Special Olympics Kangra Sports Centre — inaugurated September 17, 2022 — we train 110 regular athletes across multiple disciplines. What began as 50 athletes has more than doubled, and the results speak for themselves.

In March 2025, athlete Akriti won two Bronze medals in cross-country skiing at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. In August 2025, she received blessings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and attended the PM's Independence Day flag-raising ceremony in New Delhi.

Vocational Training

Skills that create real livelihoods

Vocational Training is central to the Trust's work. It's not about keeping students busy — it's about building real skills they can use to earn independently. Our students learn crafts that they can sell, and trades that businesses actually need.

In partnership with PNBRSETI (Punjab National Bank Rural Self Employment Training Institute) and Government Polytechnic College, Kangra, we have conducted training in bamboo crafts, soft toy making, candle making, cutting and tailoring, and more.

Bamboo craft making — indigenous craft tradition

Cutting and tailoring — marketable trade skill

Life Skills

Every Wednesday, the world is the classroom

Every Wednesday at Surya Uday is set apart — formal academics stop, and practical life skills take over. This dedicated day addresses the things textbooks cannot teach: how to stay safe, how to keep yourself, how to connect with your community.

Personal hygiene and self-care routines
Kitchen safety — chapatti making, tea preparation, stove handling
Good touch / bad touch awareness — personal safety
Sports preparation for Divyang Jan Games
